The Romantic Era in New England: Music of Victorian Boston and Beyond, a concert by The Handy Anderson Duo – Bonnie Anderson, piano and Trevor Handy, cello. Most appropriately for a house which has always centered around women, the program will include a piece by the first American woman composer to be acclaimed by European critics – Amy Marcy Cheney Beach (1867-1944). Beach was noted as a composer of large-scale “art music”. Her “Gaelic” Symphony premiered with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1896. Without European training, she became one of the most respected and acclaimed American composers of her era.
Bonnie holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from Boston University and did undergraduate studies at Juilliard. She is Artistic Director of the Piano Heritage Series at the Parish Center for the Arts in Westford, Massachusetts, where she resides. She is a long-time member of the Vista Philharmonic Orchestra of Groton, Massachusetts, and founded the Music on the Merrimack Series at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.
A native of Boston, Trevor, at the age of 15, made his solo debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He lives in Los Angeles, where he is a member of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and is principal cellist of the Santa Barbara Symphony. A Juilliard graduate, Trevor was a member of the Griffon String Quartet, which won the 1991 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. He studied in Switzerland at Yehudi Menuhin’s Summer Academy and at Lausanne’s Academy of Music in a master class given by Maurice Gendron. Trevor also plays baroque cello.
